Senior Insurance: Medicare Supplement Policies
Medicare is a federal health insurance program for people 65 years of age or older. It pays for much of your health care, but it was not designed to pay all of your doctor and hospital bills. If you rely on Medicare alone to pay for all of your care, you could be left with substantial out-of-pocket costs should you become hospitalized or need extensive outpatient treatment.
Medicare Supplements are health insurance policies sold by private heath insurance companies to fill the "gaps" in Medicare coverage, and are often referred to as Medigap policies. Medicare Supplement policies provide coverage for all Medicare-eligible charges, including:
- Part A (hospital) deductible
- Part B (physician) deductible
- Medicare-eligible charges (Parts A and B)
- Excess Part B charges
Benefits are determined by the Medicare Supplement plan you choose.
Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Plans are the newest benefit for senior insurance. These private insurance plans provide coverage for outpatient prescription drug usage not covered by Medicare.
